CHAPTER TWENTY
Mandy slammed through the schoolâs doors and raced down the hall, dodging people, knocking others out of the way if they refused to move.
âHey!â A blonde princess snarled, then stuck her nose in the air as if Mandy werenât worth even the trouble of a dressing down for daring to disturb her space.
Mandy gave her the finger and kept going.
âSlow down, Mandy. You look like a crazed drug addict late for her next fix.â Fred caught up and grabbed her wrist. âStop.â
âNo running in the hall, young lady!â a teacher called on his way down the steps to the lower level. âI shouldnât have to tell you that. This isnât first grade.â
Mandy frowned at the teacher but slowed and turned to Fred. âI have to find Bradford.â She gasped and leaned against the wall, holding her side where a major stitch had taken up residence.
âRunning until your heart blows up really wonât help the situation. Besides, whatâs Bradford gonna do for you besides shoot spitballs in your direction?â
âHe knows whatâs going on in those woods.â
The rest of the Science Club approached them, books dangling from hands, as they headed for their next class. They paused when they reached Mandy and Fred.
âWhat happened to you two?â Simon asked. âLooks like youâve been rolling around in a pile of leaves.â
âThatâs actually not far from the truth,â Fred said as he pulled a twig out of his hair and dropped it on the carpet.
Arnold and Gary laughed. âDid you get you some, Fred?â Gary asked.
âOh, for crying out loud.â Mandy shoved past Simon. âI have to find Bradford.â
âGuess you didnât do it for her, huh, Fred?â Arnold said.
âOh, shut up.â Fred shoulder his way around Arnold and Gary and followed Mandy down the hall.
She found a quiet corner and sank to her butt with knees bent to her chin and pulled out her phone. Sheâd have to call him.
The science boys gathered around her. âAnything we can do?â Simon asked.
âGo to class. No sense in all of us getting into trouble for skipping school. Meet me at the Retro Game Room around five this afternoon, and Iâll fill you in on everything thatâs been happening.â She bent back to her phone, her thumb over the send button.
When the boys moved off, she tapped the key and listened as some singer, yelling something about anarchy, blasted back to her instead of a regular ring tone.
A sleepy voice answered on the other end. âHello?â
âBradfordâ¦â Mandy paused. What am I doing? He probably wouldnât want to help her find Abe.
âMandy?â
She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
âIâll be there in thirty.â

Abe swam to the surface of consciousness through a sludge of pain and exhaustion. He opened his eyes and blinked, but everything around him remained dark. Had he gone blind? He swallowed several times, his mouth as dry as the Utah desert.
He shifted on the sand-like dirt and rocks of whatever floor heâd ended up on. After a moment, he sat and glanced around, then upward.
